My thoughts:

This Novella was very interesting to say the least. It was short and sweet, but very hollow to me when it came to details and characterization. I felt like I was reading a teaser and while the storyline is a good hook, it still left me a bit incomplete.

Besides my thirst for more, I found Ahmad to be a very tasteful writer. He has the makings of being a lucrative if not objective writer. I liked the general outline, the plot and I found the scenes to be pleasantly written.

His depictions of military personnel, duties, mindset and functions gave me as a reader a definitive view into the direction he wanted the story to go. As this book is a prequel I know I will be looking forward to reading the main novel.

DWED: First, tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Tremayne Johnson. I’m 34 years young and I’m a National Bestselling Author / co-owner of TBRS Publications. I was born in New Rochelle, New York and raised by my mother. I have 4 brothers and 2 sisters. I started writing when I was old enough to hold the pen steady and ever since I’ve been creating. I started out with short stories and rhymes and it eventually evolved into novel writing. It wasn’t until 2006 when I became incarcerated that I had time to think about what I was going to do. I knew if I went back to the street life things would only get worse, so I wrote a story called A Drug Dealer’s Dream and let my friend take a look at it. She was amazed and suggested I get the title published. At the time I knew nothing about the publishing industry; I just knew how to write. Since I had nothing but time on my hands, I researched everything I wanted to know and with her help I decided to self-publish. A Drug Dealer’s Dream was released in 2008.

DWED: What is something that you would credit as an inspiration for your writing?

First and foremost, the Most High is the creditor to all things in existence. I also credit my mother who raised me with morals, values and principals. Beyond those two, the streets get all the remaining credit. My inspiration comes from not wanting to live in the projects for the rest of my life. As far as other works or authors, I have none to credit for my inspiration. Although I did read a lot of urban/street fiction while I was incarcerated, but I also read science fiction, historical fiction and a few other genres.

DWED: Tell us a little about My America, how was the concept for this book formed?

My America is a unique book. I developed the concept from real life issues. At the time of me writing it, I was in the middle of writing another book, but a close friend of my father, who is deceased, started sending me all this info on the Black Panther movement and that whole 70’s era with the Black Power and the Civil Rights movement. I was intrigued, very intrigued; so intrigued that I began doing my own research on that time period. The actual story just came to me; out of nowhere. I birthed the character Martin Jones from listening to Malcolm X speeches, Fred Hampton speeches, Huey Newton speeches, Martin Luther King speeches, etc… I wanted to do something different in urban fiction; something unexpected, something out of the norm. I say the shit nobody else is going to say, or put in a book. But that’s me. My America is some serious shit; for real.

DWED: What is your favorite Genre and Why?

My favorite genre to read is social science. I love information and knowledge. You can never get enough. My favorite genre to write in is street fiction, but I’m really digging this historical fiction genre. My America may have sparked something in me that I had no clue of.

DWED: Is there any reference to your life in your books?

There’s always reference to my life in my books. I know no other way. It comes out even when I don’t know it, it’s there.

DWED: You have done a few collaborations with David Weaver, How has it been working with him?

As far as books go David and I wrote Blood Bitches together. It’s a short story series. It’s been amazing working with him. That’s my brother. Our relationship goes further than books and this publishing industry. All we got is our word, when you live up to your word, I can do nothing but respect it.

DWED: What would you say is the most difficult aspect of collaboration with another Author?

Well, Blood Bitches is my only collaboration and working with David was as easy as it can get. I think we have similar processes when we write.

DWED: Will you be working with him on more publications?

Definitely.

DWED: Have you always aspired to be a published Author?

Not at all, I aspired to be a football player as a kid, a rap star as an early teen and then a drug kingpin in my late teens. Writing books was the furthest from my mind, but like I said… I was writing. Writing was always a release for me; an escape.

DWED: Would you say you are at the place you wanted in terms of promoting yourself and your work?

I’m blessed, and I’m thankful for that, but I’m my hardest critic. I haven’t done anything yet. This is just the beginning.

DWED: What can we look forward to seeing from you in 2013-2014?

My next release is The Union 3 - The Finale (SBR Publications). That is being released on August 27th 2013. Three days after that I’m releasing a story called POP August 30th 2013 (BME Publications) which is a hip hop fiction novel. Thanksgiving Day I’m releasing King 3 (BME Publications) and before the year end maybe A Drug Dealer’s Dream 2 (BME Publications).

DWED: What would you say to any aspiring Authors who are struggling with taking that leap into publication?

If this is what you want, go for it. Go for it and don’t let ANYBOY tell you that you can’t do it. Do your research and write your ass off. You can never write enough.

DWED: Is there anything you would like our viewers to know that we haven’t covered?

If you’ve never read any of my books, I encourage you to go out and read one. My website is: www.tremaynej.com and all of my books are on Amazon.com available in paperback and Kindle. Thank you… Love… #KING

My thoughts:

This book is packed with a punch. I found myself absorbed in it from the first sentence. Why it has its raw moments, its funny and interesting moments, it did have a good pacing that kept me focused on the storyline, characters and scenes.

A. T. Hicks has a very descriptive style that not only gave me a vivid picture of each event in the book, but allowed my own imagination to follow and conjure the picture she was weaving.

I loved following Peaches an ordinary mother who found herself in an impossible situation of finding the killer of an old dear friend who found himself in an equally impossible situation that cost him his life.

Peaches & the Gambler is definitely a book I enjoyed from start to finish, and even in-between. The story flowed perfectly, allowing me as the reader to follow it effortlessly, all the while having a satisfying experience.

I must admit I read it twice, as I do most of my favorite books and I found it hard to put down each time. Thank you A. T. Hicks for allowing me this opportunity and bringing this work to my attention.

Synopsis: What does a strip club, a dead man and a Dove ice cream bar all have in common? Peaches Donnelly. Peaches Donnelly has a major problem: she's just been fired. However, standing between her and the solving of this heinous crime are two pesky daughters, a selfish opera singer sister, the diet from hell and two sexy men she can't resist. Add to this bubbling pot a hasty decision to go undercover as a stripper and you have a story rife with drama, laughs and a little dash of danger. Follow Peaches and the always funny cast of characters in this first installment of a rollicking series of cozy mysteries.

One of the many issues in this country besides Violence is the rising number of teen pregnancies. After hearing in the news that our government is pushing to have the morning after pill ready and available for use by girls as young as fifteen, I decided to give my own thoughts on this epidemic.

While I understand everyone’s frustration and anxiety in regards to a Teen’s sexuality and pregnancy, I think the general idea that is being construed amongst adults is: Our teens are sexually inactive…until they turn up pregnant.

Yes, you may have the talk with your teen in hopes to scare the bejesus out of them or give them an iota of common sense and decency, the reality of the matter is, they will still be curious, they will still feel pressure, and they will still act.

I think in order for us to control this epidemic, we must first come to terms with the fact that teens have more on their minds than academics and make-up.

For instance, I grew up in Brentwood New York, where teen pregnancy, even ten + years ago was an issue and more of a normal way of life. I am not condoning it by any means, but I did work for my high school in the counselor’s office setting up meetings, writing passes, and making up reading packets for the pregnant teens at my school.

Some of the young girls, mostly the Hispanic girls, were married young and were starting their family with their husbands. They were finishing school and would soon go on to living their lives as is natural for their culture. The Black pregnant teens were either conned by some Casanova roaming the halls looking for his next victim, abused and/or raped and forced into their pregnancy, or suffered from lack of a father figure and searched for love in the wrong places. While the groups were always of mixed nationalities, there was always a unique story behind their predicament and it helped to serve as a mental birth control for myself.

Around that time I had been going through my own inner battle. I was blossoming and my nerves were on edge. I was becoming aware of my body and a new craving to me known as desire.

Every teen goes through this but at different times based on their body’s schedule. I experienced it from the age of fifteen, but due to my own personal demons I mostly ignored it until I was about seventeen and my body was persistently telling me what it wanted.

It was a blessing to me to be able to work with the pregnant teens in my school because as they say (and I can attest to how true it is) mind over matter. And my psychological recognition of what was going on around me empowered me to abstain.

However, that can’t be said for all teens. What we as parents and all other adults need to realize is not all teens can control their urges. More often these urges mixed with peer pressure, lack of self esteem and motivation can have a disastrous outcome. And parents aren’t always to blame.

I hate it when people say “it’s a lack of home training” or “what are their parents teaching them?” or “where were their parents? Why can’t they control their kid?”

We as parents, can give our children the “talk” the “tools” and the knowledge. But as the saying goes- You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. There are countless parents who do give the talk, who give their children promise rings, take the pledge and try motivational tools to help them abstain. But you can’t control or influence every aspect of the child’s life, especially when they are not within your care 24/7.

Teens go to school, they have friends, and they may or may not partake in after school activities. And if they misbehave what options of punishment do they have? Take away the x-box, take away the cell phones, ground them, take them to counseling….that’s all well and good if you have a child that will react positively to these punishments and actually listen. But what if they don’t? What happens? They end up humiliated, regretful, pregnant or with an STD.

This is life. And what we have to understand is sometimes you can give your child the best of everything- education, love, materialistic items, care…but ultimately it is their life and they will live it regardless of their parents beliefs, rules or thoughts. And we HAVE to let them make mistakes. If you have given them every bit of knowledge you possess, what else can you do?

You can’t lock them up, that’s child abuse, and endangerment and lord knows what else. You can’t slap the crap out of them or they will run away and call CPS. You can take away everything that you worked so hard to give them, but ultimately what is that solving? What will that do but give the hormonal adolescent more ammunition to go out there and do horrible things to themselves and their lives to spite you as a parent?

So instead of focusing on what is out of our control, let’s focus on arming ourselves with the proper knowledge, advice and ways to give them one thing we can do- Make them aware by being aware ourselves.

We have already come to terms with the fact that with their body’s changes they will experience different thoughts and desires. What we need to do now is familiarize ourselves with these desires, their world and come up with the best informative tool to give them a better perspective. What I see this as, is giving them “Life Priority Goals” something like a life schematic to help them find reason and rationality when faced with their teen life obstacles.

Picture
Important obstacles they face in regards to sex are listed below in priority that I feel is important. The last obstacle will feature the “Life Priority Goals”

1)  Hormones, cravings and desires- give a detailed explanation for what this is, what it may feel like and how to determine if it needs to be satisfied. As parents we know what this feels like, our bodies are used to it but it may be frightening to them. And if not properly explained the minds curiosity may get the best of them and they could act.

2) Peer Pressure- Let them know that they don’t have to do exactly what their BFF is doing. Set rules and goals. Example- Cary may be able to wear make-up at 16 because her parents allow it, but we had a talk and our household decided that seventeen is the best age for us. If you stick to that stipulation and aren’t doing it behind my back but being honest, withholding and listening to our households guidelines, not only will you be able to wear the make-up we allow, but we can also add a trip to the mall for a make-up lesson at Macy’s and I will allow your curfew to be amended with an extra half hour.
In other words give incentive for positive milestones and obedience.

3)      Predator awareness- Now I don’t mean the predators we worried about when they were young children, although they should still be weary of them. I am talking about that over hormonal boy or girl in their school that bounces from victim to victim, telling them what they want to hear, buying them things and then ultimately professing their love or hate when they are ready for the consolation prize. This goes a long way with arming your teen with positive body image, self esteem and verbal/visual cues to look for in this type of predator. Teens are naturally unsure of themselves, especially in this day and age where looks are a deciding factor in friendships and courtships. Unhealthy relationships flourish when one is in self doubt or hatred and we must recognize any signs of this in our teens in order to prevent it.

4)      Mental/Emotional/Physical priority- I waited until my early twenties when I was in college to finally allow myself to wallow in my urges. By making teens aware of their mental state, emotional state, and physical state in that exact order, they will be able to make a better judgment call for when they are ready. Explain that while their body may be ready, they need to be absolutely sure they can mentally and emotionally handle it. If they have any type of doubt then they are not ready. They especially need to be aware that once they open themselves to sexual activity at such a young age they are setting themselves up for disappointment, heart ache, lack of commitment, and ridicule. This would be a great time to include cyber bullying, reputation and rumors, and the mental affects serious relationships, attachments and remorse will have on their psyche. Also explain the pressure one is putting on their body’s expectations for more and how the lack of a committed partner can adversely affect them. Relationships come and go but dealing with lack of fidelity or frequent partners will ultimately hurt them more mentally and emotionally than they are ready to acknowledge.

They may even try to argue that they have had “boyfriends” or “girlfriends” and can handle it. But adding sex to an already emotional mixture is not healthy for them or their frail egos. Hey, even adults can’t handle break ups mixed where they had an intimate relationship. How can they expect to handle it? I am not downing their intelligence or maturity in no way, but they have enough time in their life to experience this part of adulthood. Express the need for time and exploration. Enjoy the milestones of being a teenager without adding more stress to it.

5)      Birth control/STD/Pregnancy- I believe after you have the most important talks as listed above, you can then broach the subject of Birth control, protection against STD’s and pregnancy. I believe this should be saved for last because ultimately we have to consider that sometimes when broaching this subject teens might take it as a “hall pass” to perform the act- go out and just do it. By tackling everything else first, we have led the way to a more open minded, thought provoking stimulant that may very well make them think twice and give them the tools needed to make an adult-like conscious decision to abstain.

6)      Sex on Life’s Priority Goal List- Once the talk has finished, have them write down goals for their life. And once they have thought and focused on the path they want to be on, ask them to write where on that priority list they see themselves fitting in sex. You may have asked yourself why would they do this or will they answer honestly. They may or may not, but I will tell you this, they will have thought it through enough by writing this list to see what means the most to them and if ultimately sex can wait.

With me, I waited until I was out of high school, away from friends who were active, away from pressures of being a teen and focused on new pressures like college, work, and finding myself before I thought about doing the deed.

When you have your life in perspective you will have a better idea of what milestones are important to you and where everything will fit in its own time. By sharing this tool with our teens and loved ones, we are giving them a moment to sit back and see their life the way they want it. We aren’t forcing our views on them, demanding anything of them, or pressuring them to do anything other than look at the bigger picture.

By giving them an in-depth talk, we are also opening communication on topics that they may feel scared or worried to approach. We don’t want them going to friends; unless they have their path all together and prioritized they won’t be able to give solemn advice.

Also remember as a parent we experienced these same feelings ourselves, we made our own mistakes, but it is a way of life and showing our teens how to manage is the best tool we can give them. They don’t need criticism or harsh words. If they have already had sex, say you just want to make sure everything is alright, mentally and emotionally, because who knows, they may have met their first predator and need a shoulder, not a wagging finger of judgment.

The major thing we have to tackle with our teens is lack of communication because of misunderstandings. Teens have so much pressure, judgment and insecurities from their peers, they don’t need someone who is supposed to love them to kick them when they are down. They need love, support and guidance.

Some of the things I didn’t cover in this article is Religious aspects and reports on teen pregnancy. While I feel they are important, I wanted to give an authentic and genuine article of a different perspective. Not another read filled with ratios, statistics and garble nobody is really interested in. However, if you would like to know what we are up against, take a look at the CDC website for information on the epidemic- http://www.cdc.gov/teenpregnancy/

My Thoughts:

I adored this book. Not only was it a bonding tool for me and my children, but it was entertaining, had great values that can easily be instilled in children in terminology that is not hard for them to understand. It was also easy to follow, funny, engaging and very much an enjoyable read.

Although this was my children’s and my first introduction to Tilda Pinkerton, we loved her from the start. She could be quirky and cute, intelligent, and wholesome.

Add to the mix two children who desperately wanted to save the farm they loved, you have the perfect combination for a lovely entertaining story.

DWED Interviews Angela Shelton, Author of Tilda Pinkerton’s Magical Hats

DWED: First, tell us a little about yourself.

Well, I am a writer, actor and public speaker. I left the city to live in the country and write. I collect hats, married my first love, have a German shorthaired pointer named Emma, and plan to some day get pygmy goats.

DWED: Have you always aspired to publish a novel?

Yes! I have been a writer since I was eight. I entered and won a lot of writing contests as a kid. I knew I wanted to write, wasn’t sure if it was a book, movie, or memoirs… Yes, I thought about writing memoirs as a kid. I had a lot to say about life!

DWED: Would you say the journey to publishing was easy or hard? Why?

Publishing was not that difficult, rejection was. (Ha!) I had been with a big publisher for my first book and had gotten them through a random set of circumstances – they heard me speak at a church and approached me.

With Tilda, I went to another big publisher and was rejected. They said Tilda was too educational for them, too geared towards smarter children. That’s what sold me to keep it as it was!

I wrote a larger and smaller book series with Tilda as a vocabulary builder for kids so they more you learn the more you get to know about Tilda. The smaller chapter books are Tilda Pinkerton’s Magical Hats for beginner readers with a very large glossary. Those books show how Tilda gifts hats to kids on Earth so they can be their own heroes. The larger books are The Adventures of Tilda Pinkerton for more advanced readers (50+ women are the biggest buyers actually). They show where Tilda came from (the Sombrero Galaxy) and how she gets to Earth.

The bigger publishing house said writing for different age groups was clever but they wouldn’t know which one to start with first so they were passing.

I went the smaller indie publishing route with Quiet Owl because I had more control, kept a larger percentage once the art was paid for, and had a smaller group of people to work with. With the big house there were so many people that it got a bit like too many cooks.

DWED: Who or what would you say inspired Tilda Pinkerton’s Magical Hats”?

Meditation. Yes, I was in a prayer/meditation asking for the muses to give me another book idea that was fun, nothing to do with trauma and recovery, and good for kids.  I got “Tilda Pinkerton collects hats” and I was hooked. I thought, tell me more… and so Tilda began.

Most of my ideas have come through dreams or meditation and prayer.

DWED: How does Tilda Pinkerton’s Magical Hatsstand out? What does it offer and more importantly what can viewers find within it pages?

The smaller books stand out because the kids are the heroes. I turned the hero/heroine on its head (with a great hat) and instead of making the hero change everyone - she gives the children, and many adults in the story, a hat that inspires them to change their own lives.

Within the pages is a glossary of bigger words to learn as you read. There are also coloring pages at the beginning of each chapter that you can color, if the book belongs to you.

DWED: At length how would you describe the feedback for Tilda Pinkerton’s Magical Hats”?

So far what I wanted to happen has – smart kids and clever parents LOVE and “get” Tilda. Teachers really like the chapter books too. I’ve been contacted by a group of them who are using the book in their classrooms. That makes me do a happy dance.

I’ve heard from three people so far that it was too educational for them and too focused on teaching kids better vocabulary, but that’s what I wanted to do!

Plus, I have no interest in dumbing down writing to appeal to everyone. That’s what is dumbing down our nation. I’m perfectly fine with precocious kids loving Tilda.

I’ve also heard from quite a few parents and kids that they are now inspired to make hats – which makes me giddy! If I inspire families to bring more creativity into their homes as well as teach their kids larger words to combat the LOLs of the world, then I have done my job.

DWED: Would you say you have a unique style of writing?

Writing Tilda books (big and small), I definitely have a style. It is very Suessian. Tilda’s voice is almost written to be sung, even though I am not a singer, that’s how I see and hear her.

DWED: what kind of messages do you try to instill in your writing?

I prefer clean ones (in the children’s books anyway). The Tilda books, large and small, have many lessons in them. The first book focuses on paying off your debts, learning a new trade, inventing new products and respecting the old as you incorporate the new.

The main morals are that you have the power to change your life and be a better citizen of the world.

DWED: Who is your favorite character in Tilda Pinkerton’s Magical Hatsand why?

That would have to be Tilda Pinkerton herself because she speaks in rhyme. She inspires children to be their own heroes, and makes people think outside the box.

DWED: Who is your least favorite character in Tilda Pinkerton’s Magical Hatsand why?

I really don’t have a least favourite character.  They all make me giggle, even Mr. Seedy.

DWED: What can we look forward to seeing from you throughout 2013?

By day I help service providers (therapists, social workers, nurses, teachers, preachers etc. ) who are helping survivors of abuse heal. Throughout 2013, I have been setting up HealingSpeakers.com for those healing from abuse and trauma and those helping them heal and move on.

By night I write books, scripts and TV shows.  I have one that may be on TV in 2014 – crossing fingers and toes.

Of course, there are more Tilda books to come for beginning and advanced readers while my hat collection grows.

DWED: What would you say to all aspiring authors like yourself?

Love your rejection letters and keep writing!  The publishing world is changing so drastically by the minute, so don’t let what one publisher says about your book sway your own intuition about it. Go find readers.

DWED: Is there anything we haven’t covered that you would like your readers and potential readers to know about both your work and yourself?

Folkmanis puppets sponsored Tilda’s chapter books and there are puppet videos for the large glossary of words on MagicHatShop.com.

About the author

Nicole Dunlap holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Child Development, and a Masters Degree in Educational Counseling from Azusa Pacific University–mantra Jesus first. She counsels in the inner city of San Bernardino; motivating teens dealing with depression, pregnancy, gang membership and abuse. She has been self dubbed the “gumbo genre” novelist, because books shouldn’t be lightly seasoned… Her stories revolve around family and relationships, women’s issues, drizzled with drama, peppered with suspense, and finished off with aromatic notes of romance. The Shaw Family Saga pays homage to dysfunctional mother-daughter relationships, with well developed characters that readers can root for; love them, hate them, cry for, and most of all, yearn to flip through the pages to the end of that character’s journey.
